At 6 km from Naoussa we will meet Arkochori. A picturesque village at an altitude of 600 meters drowned in green.
It has many stone-built houses with tiled roofs and lush green courtyards. In the summer, it has a population of about 200 inhabitants, while in winter most of them move to Naoussa.
The oldest name of the village, until 1926, was Arkoudochori, obviously because there would be abundant bears at that place!
Sightseeing: Arriving in the village we will easily find the paved square. There we will find the old school, as well as two traditional cafes and a tavern. We will swim in the picturesque alleys of the village, admiring magnificently restored mansions with loggias and sachnisia. It is also worth visiting the folklore museum of the village, which is housed in the central square. Various household items, agricultural tools, etc. are displayed.
For play: Within the settlement you will find sports facilities that everyone can use for free: 5×5 pitch, tennis court, basketball court, bicycle space, playground and plenty of lawn.
With view: To enjoy a panoramic view of the plain of Imathia we will climb to the top of the hill where the church of the village, Agios Dimitrios, dominates.
It is also worth visiting the folklore museum of the village, which is housed in the central square. Various household items, agricultural tools, etc. are displayed.
Local custom: A good occasion to visit Arcochori is the local custom “karteus”. It is celebrated each year on the last night of December 23 and the first Monday afternoon. Everybody gathers in the square at night, manually builds a huge tower with tall logs and then lights up a great fire. Then all together, locals and “strangers” around the Thracian drink a wine, smacking pies and singing the traditional Macedonian “collolandas”.
For food: In “Harama” where the taste has another color and quality. A careful small tavern at the edge of the settlement with unique delicacies inspired by tradition and recipes with sweet-tasting flavors await you to try them next to the fireplace with a rich variety of mainly local wines.
